#1000 stockholm by us

#1000 on pixels since 19 October 2005

A thousand photos is a lot. Finding highlights in that pile isn't entirely easy and it's perfectly subjective of course. Still, we tried. These are some of our own favorite shots. You can find them all in our personal top-20 lists:

A special thanks to our guests Kenneth, Patrik, Michael, Christer and Pia who have enriched this blog. Most of all, our sincere gratitude goes out to you - our readers. Without you, this little idea in October 2005 wouldn't have taken off at all.

Discovering and sharing Stockholm through text and photos has been a unique experience and we like to think the best is yet to come. So stay tuned for more of stockholm by pixels. Tomorrow, photo #1001.

mid-month theme: subway day

It's not only the commuters that have to wait for the train; the driver has to wait for the passengers to embark the train before he can close the doors. "Look out for the doors, the doors will be closed" or as they usually say in Swedish "se upp for dårarna". This is the blue line between Kungsträdgården and Hjulsta. Picture from Rådhuset subway station.

subway day is a mid-month theme shared by the following blogs:

shopping cathedral

In need of a sign from above? Kista Galleria offers plentiful. It is a commercial temple for any shopaholic. The major attraction is however its food court. We’d go for lunch and skip the shopping.
Listen and see more?

the key, please

This giant lock you can find on Täby Church. Built during the 13th century it is one of the most well conserved churches from the Middle Ages. Through the door you enter the porch. The porch was added to the church in the middle of the 15th century.

let there be light

The interior of Tibble Church i Täby. All four walls are made of glass which creates a spectacular light as the sun moves during the day.
This is a modern church, it was inaugurated in 1978.
It's located on the top floor of larger building in the center of Täby.

the sauna

After a warm and relaxing sauna you just jump into the sea. If there isn't ice 'cause then you have to make a hole first. This sauna can be found in Åkersberga.

A Djurgården Ferry arriving at Skeppsholmen. This ferry serves Stockholm’s inner harbor and is included in the city’s public transportation network.

an ancient blogger

A thousand years ago, during the Iron Age, blogging wasn't as easy as today. First you needed a hammer, a chisel and a giant stone or a rock. Then a couple of months later when you finished writing, you had to distribute it... This stone is located at Jarlabankes bridge in Täby. The area is famous for its population of rune stones.
.
"Jarlabanke lät resa dessa stenar efter sig, medan han ännu levde, och han gjorde denna bro för sin själ, och ensam ägde han hela Täby.
Gud hjälpe hans själ."

the church

Dating from the 13th Century, Täby Church in Täby Kyrkby is best known for its beautiful 15th Century ceiling paintings by the Nordic countries’ foremost monumental painter at that time, Albert Målare (Albertus Pictor). More about them later...

last night we had a party...

A dream cottage not far from the city, near Täby Golf Club, in a stunning village location and with beautiful views through all walls, with the added benefit of being able to provide wild life just around the corner. It would make a superb large family home for a small family. At present being abandoned after a party last night...

24 hours

In Sweden we take 24 hour cruises to enjoy ourselves with booze, beer and maybe some dancing. This floating discotheque goes to tax-free heaven Åland and back. Next day we leave the ship with headache, tax-free liqour and arms like an orangutan.

Roller Coasters, Free Fall and a house full of ghosts. Gröna Lund, the oldest amusement park in Sweden doesn't look very cheerful on a cloudy afternoon in March. It looks just old...

the Office

I hope the King has an office that is a bit more modern than the facing of the Royal Palace. On the other hand I'm glad that the facing of the palace isn't modern. The palace is built in baroque style by Nicodemus Tessin and is formed like a Roman palace.

a house for the young ones

This is a house for the young ones in Rinkeby. Once again I don't know if it's built to keep them on the inside or preventing them from coming in. If I look at the bright side of life... at least they have a house of their own! On the inside you find a café, gym, dance halls, halls for girls only and conference rooms.
