#1004 cemetery time (2)

There are not only gravestones and massive grave chambers at the Northern Cemetery. Every now and then you can see some "lighter" monuments. This is in memory of Betty Pettersson, Sweden's first female student (1871). There is also a beautiful stone over one of the victims in the tsunami 2004, which I choose not to show though. Those of you who visit this cemetery will find it. It's all blue and in the shape of a wave. Very nice stone. It made me stop and think for a while, how we often take life for granted, and how quickly it can be taken away...

#1000 stockholm by us

#1000 on pixels since 19 October 2005

A thousand photos is a lot. Finding highlights in that pile isn't entirely easy and it's perfectly subjective of course. Still, we tried. These are some of our own favorite shots. You can find them all in our personal top-20 lists:

20 by bernt
20 by per
20 by peter
20 by stefan

A special thanks to our guests Kenneth, Patrik, Michael, Christer and Pia who have enriched this blog. Most of all, our sincere gratitude goes out to you - our readers. Without you, this little idea in October 2005 wouldn't have taken off at all.

Discovering and sharing Stockholm through text and photos has been a unique experience and we like to think the best is yet to come. So stay tuned for more of stockholm by pixels. Tomorrow, photo #1001.

#998 play it again, Orfeus

Detail from the statue in front of the Concert hall at Haymarket (Hötorget). I tried to copy Per's blue sky, but didn't quite make it.

Lightpost in Hammarby Sjöstad. Definitely a different approach. I really need to see this in action some time...

#992 cemetery time

Time to go to a cemetery again. This time the Northern Cemetery. This grave chamber door looks as if it could have been in Lord of the Rings. I have never seen anything like it, except in that film. It's stunning. More to come from this place, both here and on plenty.

TIE starfighter?

There are similarities, don't you think? When I first saw this piece of art, I immediately thought of the starfighters from Star Wars. I wonder if this artist had the same thoughts in his/her mind when this was created? It's located outside the Television house at Oxenstiernsgatan.

water week: don't run in the stairs children - it's slippery when wet

This "water-staircase" is found in Hammarby Sjöstad. It's yet another water exhibition by Mikael Pauli & Dag Birkeland (remember the fountain?).

hightower (2)

I've already been here once before, 7 months ago. By then there was only a skeleton. This time we're on the other side of the tower though. Today people actually live in it.

the secret light revealed

Here's the secret light source that Per used so cleverly for the pink buildings. As you can see, it's a very powerful illumination. The big screen paints almost everything around it in the predominant colour.

grab a beer and come over

In this case it's quite a large beer, I'd say. The alcohol strength is not that high but since the can is big you might get drunk anyway. So where can I get me one of those, you wonder? First you will have go to the fairly new City Gross in Ulvsunda, then you need to climb the brick wall. In case you should succeed with the first two, you will have at least two more problems to overcome. How are you gonna get it down, and how will you get it home?

let's get globe'al again

It's been a while now, since the Globe was (a)round. A "lady in red", dressed up for the night, with a lot of shining jewelry around her. Like the "diamond" bracelet? Picture taken from the subway station.

Anyone who wants to guess where it's at? Hint: I've already shown you a few pics from the area. One of them in almost the same vivid colours. No? Maybe this will help.

watchtower?

It could have been - but, no. It's the clock tower of Essinge Church, inaugurated in 1959. It's completely separated from the rest of the church (much to my surprise). The tower is 48m high. The architect was Cyrillus Johansson, who also did a nice bridge.

go ballistic

Something seems to be wrong about this picture but I can't really put my finger on it. But wait... shouldn't the runway be in another direction? I've never seen them lift off like that? Well - not to worry, this Saab 35 Draken will stay grounded for a quite a while. It's found in an industrial area near Bromma airport.

One of the two King's Towers (Kungstornen) in evening shroud. Kindly enough they have left the light burning on the upper floor, giving the statues an eerie green light. There is a surprise for you in this pic. See if you can find it :-)

On Tegeluddsvägen, the Swedish channel TV4 has its home (among others). On the map link, this house is the rightmost of the three big houses. Everybody was still busy working when we passed. Not a single light was out.

daily photo theme day: graffiti

.
Graffiti is not really a city thing in Stockholm. Never has been. We don't have the spaces for it. Tags (namewriting) are found everywhere though. But the theme says Graffiti - not taging. Graffiti is mostly found in Suburbia. So I went there, for the first time in many years. I used to be very fond of this kind of motive and have thousands of pictures from those days.

This particular picture was taken about 18 years ago. I returned there a few days ago and it's still there! The colours are not as vivid as then, but it is intact. Part of the secret may be that it's now surrounded by a 12 feet fence. There are also a lot of rubbish standing in front of it, so I couldn't take a fresh picture. You will have to believe me on my word.

There is a story to this also. The first time I saw this wall, there was a different painting on it. You will find it on plenty. I thought it was the best I had seen up to that date. When I got the pics, it hadn't turned out quite as well as I hoped, so I returned to make a better one. You can imagine my surprise when I found it like this instead. I have even spoken to the guys who did it. It was done on request, so you can call it a legal Graffiti (most are not).

Graffiti mitt i sta'n ?

sea horses?

If you have been following this blog, you can't have missed that the snow this year is almost canceled. It has snowed twice but it has rained heavy many times, causing very high water everywhere. This playground is NOT supposed to be under water. The pic is taken on Lida, an open air recreation area in the southern suburbs.
