astrolab

Astrolab is a sculpture by Alby Square. It's an astronomical instrument decorated with hundreds of ceramic plates, most of them painted by children in local schools and some made by the artist Mattias Larsson. A nice example of participatory art. Citizens take part in the creative process as opposed to just passively admiring the result of someone else's work. Read more about helping all achieve their full potential on the Botkyrka municipality web site.

triumph in Skärholmen

Once in a while we venture into Suburbia. The church in Skärholmen was opened in 1976. This is a gilded wooden triumph crucifix by Harry W Svensson. See more?

Gustaf Vasa Church (4)

...previously on pixels

Lena suggested we should take a look inside Gustaf Vasa Church as well. That was a piece of good advice. Here's the altar with magnificent sculptures, all in baroque style and originally created for the cathedral in Uppsala by carver Burchard Precht.

Piperska Muren

A statue in the park at the Piperska Muren manor house. Piperska Muren comes from the name of Count Carl Piper, who bought the manor in 1694, and the stone wall (mur) that his wife had built in 1702. Count Piper was an advisor to King Charles XII of Sweden. On this page you can see what it looked like in the old days.

The shortage of daylight calls for an extra dance (and some flash) by Sveavägen. This is the sculpture Dancing Youths by Ingvar Johnsson. The Observatory Grove (Observatorielunden) in the background. See more?

iron sunrise (2)

previously on pixels

How can a large sculpture, mostly out of black iron, radiate so much light? The generous September sunlight explores and reflects all over Gryning (Dawn) by Stefan Thorén at Brunkebergstorg (here). The sculpture, originally installed at Medborgarplatsen in 1979, portrays our solar system in morning light. See more?

St. Gertrude's Church (2)

previously on pixels

Last week we learnt that St. Gertrude is the patron saint of travellers. The German Church in the old town (here) is from the 14th century but the painted windows are "only" a century old.

iron sunrise

I've rushed by Brunkeberg Square (here) many times without paying attention to Gryning (Dawn) by Stefan Thorén. It took a vacation day and a bit of strolling in the September sun for me to notice this sculpture made of iron. Black iron and "gold". The sunlight is reflected by the various surfaces. Go see for yourself if you have the chance. Here's a detail, we'll see more later on.

sing-along is prohibited

Once you've passed these doors, it's not a good decision to sing with the artists. I suspect they don't even want to be called artists. Performers is probably better. This is one of the doors to the Royal Swedish Opera at Gustaf Adolfs Torg.

.En imponerande ornamenterad dörr leder in till "öfre och nedre tredje raden" på Operan. Gissningsvis blir man utkastad genom densamma rätt snabbt, om man själv upphäver sin stämma i "allsång på operan" :-)

drummer boy

Today is closing day for this year's Sthlm Jazz Festival and we are sure it was a huge success. Every year one hears complaints that there is too much pop and too little jazz. Anyway, outside the Festival area on Friday afternoon the Stockholm Landslaget 2007 played - and boy, did they play a mean jazz! Here are some photos of what it looked inside. Want to see the whole band?

shine a little light

This is a nice lantern. You can almost imagine a hundred years back when the guy goes around lighting them all with a long stick. Today it's of course electric light. It's in the inner yard of Hallwylska Museet, a museum filled with lots of interesting furniture and nice things. During summer you can also visit in the evenings, from some time in the middle of July, and listen to a little music from Vienna.

En av innergårdslamporna på Hallwylska museet. På somrarna kan man ibland lyssna till wienermusik här också när Stockholms Operettensemble uppträder. Riktigt trevligt och kan varmt rekommenderas.
