The Posten head office building from below. Many people - yes, me too - think the building resembles a large ship.

floor or roof ?

I think the pillars might be a clue. Of course it's a roof. The church on Skeppsholmen is only a church by name. It's not used any more for cermons, as a matter of fact you can rent it for parties if you like. I went there some days ago, expecting to find a closed door, but it was open. And guess what - rented for a private party.

daily photo theme day: numbered parking

The multi-storey car park Parkaden may not be a beauty, but it has an original design: the walls are decorated with stylized numbers. If you look closely (click on photo) you can see that the house is six stories high.

sunny in solna

Part of the Solna Municipality, Bergshamra (pop. 7300) is a suburb without much of a history. It was established after WWII (which obviously left Sweden almost unaffected by hostilities) and has been extended several times.

fiasco colossale

Sweden has a reputation as a nation of ship-builders. It's pretty ironic that one of the most spectacular failures in the construction of maritime vessels has turned into a huge tourist attraction of ours. We didn't have a leaning tower so we built a glorious and mighty warship which immediately sank on her maiden voyage in 1628. The Vasa Museum is constantly among the most popular places to visit in town and, in fact, the most popular museum in all of Scandinavia.

the university of life

In the University of Life we're all students. There are many paths to knowledge and knowledge hasn't much to do with wisdom. Go figure!

With 4600 full-time employees and 39000 students (figures from 2006) the Stockholm University is an educational power house. Here's a view inside one of the six main buildings "södra husen" of the campus in Frescati. See more?

functionalism

Socialhögskolan (Stockholm University Department of Social Work) is a fine example of early functionalism where buildings were designed based on light and purpose rather than concentrating on ornamentation which used to be the case. It was built in 1936 and architects were Ahrbom and Zimdahl. I find the stairs especially interesting.

history in the making

photo #900 on pixels since October 19, 2005

Sweden's cultural history is on display seven days a week by Djurgårdsvägen. The island of Djurgården is jam-packed with attractions and Nordiska museet ("the Nordic Museum") is the very first you encounter after passing the Djurgården Bridge. You won't miss it, it's not exactly smallish. Here is a misty view by Stefan.

destruction/construction?

The old mail center at Klara (built in the early 80's) is presently being torn down (it started on Dec 11th). In 2010 the new building will be ready, almost 75000 squaremeters big (hotel 20500, conference 20000 and office-space 34000). Right now it looks as if war has come to Stockholm, but I guess it always will when old buildings have to go. The machines used to tear it down are awesome. They chew the concrete like it was a sandwich. Have a look at plenty.

...previously on pixels
.
Prästgatan (the Priest Street, here) runs all the way through the Old Town and has remained unchanged since 1885. The name was first used in the 16th century and its history can be traced further back. Stockholm and Sweden has enjoyed peace for centuries and for this reason we've got more than our fair share of historical buildings. We would have had a lot more of those if there hadn't been a demolition spree in the 1960's when local politicians destroyed hundreds of buildings while trying to reshape most of the inner city.
