cherry bloom

The cherry trees are once again in full bloom in Kungsträdgården (Kings Garden). Ahhh, this we like!

on the sunny side of Slussen

- Yes, I know they call this spring but do bring your coat!

April in Stockholm can be confusing. Finally, we have so much daylight and yet the evenings can be bitingly chilly. Recognize the ship in the background?

keep the change

Keep the change, said the tourist with a friendly grin

The Swedish krona might be at a symbolic low against major currencies. Still, our City Hall (Stadshuset) has got no less than three of them on top of that tower, 106 meter tall.

nocturne for af chapman (2)

75 meter long, 11 meter wide and with 280 beds, the af Chapman is not exactly your average youth hostel. However, some of the romance fades at this gate. Code lock is one thing but does it have to resemble a fortress?

pimp my ride

If you're restricted to go by subway, you'll have to rely to others to pimp your ride. Some do it legally (I gather this one is) and some do it illegaly (as in "bombing"). This is the second time I see a complete set that has different "clothing".

a very well polished geyser

Yellowish little men on a grey day replaced by black silhouettes and dewy air in front of a backlit glass structure now spewing water like a very well polished geyser.

not your average plumber

Maybe not a job for your average plumber, but little yellow men stick at nothing. A little fix here, a little kick there and "she'll soon be as good as new".

what a relief!

Here is a work of art, strangely unknown. So many people have passed this relief in the cultural centre Kulturhuset. It was created by Rolf Blylods in 1971. Alright, this particular angle is a bit odd but I had to catch your attention somehow. See more?

nocturne for af chapman

Ever since 1949, the Swedish Tourist Association (STF) manages a full-rigged youth hostel. Moored on Skeppsholmen in the city center, the steel ship af Chapman is an integral part of Stockholm's waterfront.

stone serious

- You and me, my dearest. We'll conquer the rest.

Looks like a loving gesture, doesn't it? This is actually part of a bigger scene. There's a whole family of four in the statue called "The Family" or "Towards future" by Nils Sjögren at Vår gård ("our farm"), a conference center in Saltsjöbaden.

Sorunda Church

This church looks lovely from a distance, with it's lighting. Coming closer, there's evidence it might need some cleaning. Even so, it looks great. The inside is very nice too, that's why we chose it to get married in, last August. This is Sorunda Church at night.

No, this is not a black and white photo, it is in full colour. The photo is taken on the escalator up to the Jakobsberg commuter rail station platform. I think the lines and light are quite cool.

mid-month theme: subway day

Almost half of the 4800 inhabitants of Hallonbergen ("Raspberry Mountains") in Sundbyberg Municipality are born in other countries. From the subway station you can reach Stockholm City in 13 minutes. This train is accelerating north-west and will arrive in Kista in three minutes.

the curvature of space (2)

The Earth's axis is tilted 23° from the plane of orbit around the sun. As the northern hemisphere is heading for brighter days, more sunlight permeates The Stockholm Centre for Physics, Astronomy and Biotechnology (AlbaNova universitetscentrum). That's when us wanna-be astronomers find new reasons to marvel at the curvature of space in this magnificent building. See more?

water week: son of a plumber

Now is the time of year to look after that garden fountain, making sure it will sprinkle and squirt its way through another summer. At Sergel Square they're getting ready as well. Perhaps not a job for your average local plumber.

Nah... seems OK to me. If you like a bath in the winter, that is. You can go directly into the water. Convenient. The rest of us should stay away. At least according to the sign.

water week: Kastellholmen

Kastellholmen ("castellum islet") in the immediate centre of Stockholm. Ever since the mid 1660s the flag on the castellum has been hoisted every day telling that Sweden is still a free and independent nation. In the old days this was a part of Stockholm's fortification. Here is a close-up of the castellum.

water week: the unwanted flow

Contrary to what one might believe, water is a major issue in the subway. Tunnels lie beneath the rest of the urban environment. That's pretty obvious. Unfortunately, the bedrock is not completely dry. There will always be water permeating caves and tunnels. Dripping onto the platforms. Trickling along cables and infrastructure. Destroying artistic decorations. Given enough time, water is a certainty. Look closely at this photo and you'll see pipes running along the rocky roof above the platform in Skarpnäck. That's the name of the game in subway maintenance. Water.

water week: negotiating icy waters

Saltsjöbaden (nowadays part of Nacka Municipality) was established as a sea side resort. The single most important event here during the twentieth century was the Saltsjöbaden Agreement on industrial relations which paved the way for decades of strong growth and a peaceful labor market. This quiet icy harbour will soon be a busy place again as winter gives way to warmer seasonal sensations for sailors of various calibers.

logos in bagarmossen

- Now please pay attention. When the big hand's on 3...

After appealing to emotions by pathos - logos is the third and final pillar of rhetoric. Whatever the issue, here in Bagarmossen ("Baker's Bog") subway station or elsewhere - logos means constructing an argument by logical reasoning.

Earth Hour on Skansen - Stockholm

A bunch of people trying to keep warm at the outdoor museum Skansen during Earth Hour. There was entertainment to be had. For one hour, mostly "unplugged" and with most lights off. It was so foggy and the smoke on top of that, so the grand views I wanted to show were not to have.

constructivism in fisksätra

Art in public places can be inconspicuous, minimalistic. A blink of the eye and you'd have missed it. ”Arkitekta Skulpturum” by Bertil Herlov Svensson does not fall into this category. This eight meter high aluminum sculpture in Fisksätra is an impressive statement. So, what does it tell us?

daily photo theme day: yellow sub(way station)

For Yellow Day, we're back down under. That is, under street level. We're still in Stockholm of course. This very yellow wall is at the subway station Medborgarplatsen (Civic Square). The tiles are partly from the Thirties. The mosaic from 1997 by Mari Pårup is called approximately "the sun and time have their way".
